September 16, 2001: Bin Laden Denies Involvement in 9/11 Attacks Confirming earlier reports [Reuters, 9/13/2001] , bin Laden denies any involvement in the 9/11 attacks. In a statement to Al Jazeera, he states, “I would like to assure the world that I did not plan the recent attacks, which seems to have been planned by people for personal reasons.” [CNN, 9/17/2001] The US claims that he confesses his role in a video message two months later, but the contents of that video are highly disputed.
